Getting to Oke Beach House (Rāwhiti, Bay of Islands)

Enter 125 Rawhiti Road, Rawhiti 0184 into the GPS.

Oke Beach House is located at Oke Bay, Rāwhiti, on the eastern side of the Bay of Islands. The journey is straightforward whether you’re driving from Auckland or flying into Kerikeri.

Driving from Auckland

Distance: approx. 260 km

Time: 3.5–4 hours (allow extra time in summer or long weekends)

Head north from Auckland on State Highway 1 toward Whangārei.

Continue past Whangārei on SH1.

Just past the BP petrol station at Whakapara, turn right onto Russell Road.

Follow Russell Road as it winds east toward the coast (this is a rural road — take your time).

At approx 44mins (38.5km) from the turn off from SH1, the road takes a natural right turn and becomes Rawhiti Road (Russell Road continues if you were to go straight ahead however a good sign that you are on the wrong path is that the road is gravel / shingle).

Continue onto Rāwhiti Road, following signs for Rāwhiti.

A furthur 10kms along the road, you will have the option to turn sharp left onto Manawaora Road via single land bridge, DO NOT TAKE THIS OPTION, instead continue straight onto Rawhiti Road which is now a GRAVEL / SHINGLE road.

Drive especially carefully on this road.

Drive through Rāwhiti until you reach Hauai Bay.

Look up to your right and you will see Oke Beach House on the ridge.

Enter the shared driveway at 125 Rawhiti Road and follow the entrance way road up to the top of the hill.

Flying to Kerikeri, then driving

Flight time (Auckland → Kerikeri): approx. 45 minutes

Drive time (Kerikeri → Oke Beach House): 1.5 hours

Distance: approx. 75 km

Fly from Auckland Airport (AKL) to Kerikeri Airport (KKE).

Collect a rental car at the airport.

Set GPS for Opua (32min 28.5km)

At Opua, take the car ferry to Okiato (10-15mins).

Set GPS for 125 Rawhiti Road, Rawhiti 0184 (30.7kms).

Take Aucks Road for 27kms until you come to a fuel station on your right, just past here is the turn off to the right into Russell Whakapara Road (if you don't turn off, you will end up in Russell).

Follow Russell Whakapara Road without turning off as it becomes Kempthorne Road and then Manawaora Road.

You will arrive at a single lane bridge and then a T intersection.

Turn left onto Rawhiti Road which is now a GRAVEL / SHINGLE road.

Drive especially carefully on this road.

Drive through Rāwhiti until you reach Hauai Bay.

Look up to your right and you will see Oke Beach House on the ridge.

Enter the shared driveway at 125 Rawhiti Road and follow the entrance way road up to the top of the hill.
